How does the baby affect our daily routines?

Categorizing Our Routines

We broke our routines into the following rough categories:
  • Sleep
  • Work
  • Daycare
  • Prepare for the above
  • Relax
  • Play with Baby
  • Feed Baby
  • Change Diaper
  • Housework
Many things we do don't fit perfectly in these categories, but they aren't regular enough to capture in a typical routine. Examples of these are bathing the baby, calming him while he fusses, and exercising. These generally fall into the feed baby, prepare for work, and relax time slots.

Plotting Our Routines

Below is an interactive plot that gives a rough breakdown of our daily routines:

Note that the mother's work block is rather large for two main reasons:
  1. Her commute is longish.
  2. She gets every other Friday off.

Summary

We're lucky in that the baby started sleeping through the night at 11 weeks, so we get large, consolidated blocks of sleep. We're also lucky in that he's very calm and only really fusses at us in the 6 - 7 pm time slot (one of us often rocks him with one hand and eats with the other). There's no guarantee that your schedule will look anything like this, but hopefully this is helpful to someone.
